Make valances for your kitchen windows that blend in well with the appliances and furnishings that are in the room. Some basic materials are all that are needed to complete this project and you do not have to sew any of the pieces.

Use The Following Materials

  • plain colored fabric
  • fabric paint
  • stencils
  • sponge
  • bowl
  • paint brush
  • scissors
  • curtain clips
  • curtain rods
  • hardware
  • screwdriver
  • self-adhesive trim
  • tarp or sheeting (to protect the surface that you are painting on)

Cut The Fabric And Add Paint

Measure the width of each window that you are going to be decorating. Cut fabric pieces that are slightly wider than the measurements. Determine how low you would like each valance to hang and cut all of the pieces so that they are the same length. Lay out the pieces of fabric on a covered surface.

Pour acrylic paint into a bowl. Place stencils on the fabric and fill them in with a paintbrush and paint. If you would like to add texture to the fabric, dip a sponge into the paint and dab it onto different parts of the fabric. Wait a couple hours for the paint to dry.

Add Trim And Attach The Clips

Measure pieces of self-adhesive trim that are the same length as the pieces of fabric. Peel off the adhesive backing on the trim and press the pieces firmly onto the top and bottom edges of the fabric. The trim will cover any edges that are frayed and will complement the colors of the fabric and paint. Attach curtain clips that are connected to curtain rings across the top of each valance. Use a measuring tape to assist with spacing the clips out evenly across the fabric. Slide the curtain rings onto curtain rods when you are finished.

Hang Up The Valances

Attach the curtain rods over each window with hardware and a screwdriver. The new valances will give your kitchen an updated and attractive appearance. Keep the valances looking fresh by occasionally washing the fabric. Remove the clips from the fabric and toss the valances into a washing machine. Fabric paint can safely be laundered without having to be concerned about it fading or peeling. Keep extra trim on hand to replace pieces that become loose.

Since making this type of valance doesn't require a lot of time or materials, make new ones for other rooms in your home that you would like to improve the appearance of. You can also shop other types of window treatments at Snyders Shades & Shutters.
